8 Programmed Activities (7 PAs)

This post is for a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, 8 Programmed Activities, in the All Age Eating Disorder Service, based at Orchards Health Centre, Gascoigne Road, Barking, IG11 7RS.

This is a replacement substantive post of 8 Programmed Activities (PAs) with a ratio of 6 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) to 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).

The purpose of this job description is to outline the level of responsibility and accountability of this post. This will ensure that all work undertaken by our staff is clearly identified and carried out under clear lines of accountability.

The expectation of the post holder will be to support their team, department and organisation to follow the Trust’s Values in their day-to-day work.

  • We are kind
  • We are respectful
  • We work with our communities

This is a well-established post and has become vacant due to the previous consultant psychiatrist taking up a position in another NELFT service. A lot of transformation has taken place already and continues to take place within Community CAMHS and eating disorder services.

The postholder will provide senior medical leadership and specialist medical input within the Eating Disorder Service, supporting high-quality assessment, formulation, diagnosis, and treatment planning in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing care to children and young

people with eating disorders and associated mental health needs, across Barking and Dagenham, Havering,

Redbridge, and Waltham Forest.

The successful candidate will provide senior medical support to the team, and direct input on clinical cases. The consultant will be expected to provide guidance and supervision to the team, work directly with children and young people, and their families, and liaise as appropriate with other external CAMHS mental health providers, local community paediatric services, and acute hospitals. You will work alongside another CAMHS Consultant Psychiatrist (Dr Arun Bhaskaran), an Adult Consultant Psychiatrist (Dr Marianne Hayward), and 1 Resident Doctor in higher training (in general adult psychiatry), within the service.

There will also be the opportunity for the post holder to further develop links already established with the local acute trusts’ A&E departments and inpatient wards, to continually improve our services. The post holder will have a key role in liaising with Paediatric teams across the local acute trusts and co-ordinating care of patients during acute paediatric admissions. As the service is exclusively an outpatient service, the post holder will not hold an inpatient case load, but the post holder will work with specialist eating disorder inpatient units and generic Adolescent Units where patients are admitted, aiding smooth transition to different levels of care.

We receive Year 4 medical students on clinical placement from Barts & The London School of Medicine, Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL). QMUL students can also request to do Student Selected Component (SSC) placements with us. There are opportunities for Psychiatrists within the team to take an active role in teaching both in terms of clinical work and curriculum delivery as well as delivering lectures and acting as examiners in the Clinical Examinations at QMUL. Psychiatrists in the team are also expected to offer shadowing opportunities for student nurses and new starters joining the team.

On-call responsibilities

The postholder will be part of the Senior CAMHS Psychiatrist on-call rota covering out of hours and weekends for Mental Health Services in NELFT. The on call will cover service delivery for Children and Adolescents presenting with mental health problems. The on-call rota is covered by the local community substantive CAMHS consultants and the two inpatient CAMHS consultants. This rota is currently 1:12 rota, with a 3% Category A salary supplement.
