Clinical Role Overview

Windows Desktop Accessibility Specialist - Contract

Remote - UK based Initial 3-6 months, with potential extension £(Apply online only) dependent on experience

We're looking for an experienced Windows Desktop Accessibility Specialist to support a global software company in improving accessibility across its complex desktop applications.

This is a technical, hands-on leadership role for someone who understands native Windows applications and can confidently guide engineering teams through both straightforward and highly complex accessibility challenges.

You might come from a specialist accessibility engineering background or be an experienced Windows application developer with strong practical accessibility expertise.

The key is being able to hit the ground running, solve technical problems and drive accessibility improvements forward.

What you'll be doing

  • Investigate complex accessibility issues across native Windows desktop applications and provide practical, code-level guidance to engineering teams.
  • Advise on Microsoft UI Automation, keyboard accessibility, focus management, screen reader compatibility and accessible UI controls.
  • Work closely with developers to identify technical solutions and prioritise accessibility fixes.
  • Build, manage and prioritise an accessibility remediation backlog based on customer impact, WCAG requirements and technical risk.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and engineering teams to plan and deliver accessibility improvements.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and guidance to developers.
  • Help establish accessibility standards, processes and best practices across desktop applications.

What we're looking for

  • Strong technical understanding of native Windows desktop application development, particularly WPF, WinForms and/or other Windows UI frameworks.
  • Proven experience investigating and resolving software accessibility issues, ideally within Windows desktop applications.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft UI Automation, keyboard navigation, screen readers and Windows accessibility APIs.
  • Ability to confidently advise experienced developers on complex technical accessibility challenges, including at code level.
  • Experience leading technical remediation work, managing backlogs and prioritising improvements.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, Product Managers and other stakeholders.
  • A proactive, independent approach, comfortable taking ownership and driving work forward. Experience with Telerik UI controls, MDL or accessibility within complex enterprise desktop software would be particularly valuable.

Why this opportunity?

You’ll be working with an established global software company on technically challenging applications used by customers worldwide.

This isn't simply an accessibility auditing or testing role. You’ll be directly involved in solving engineering challenges, influencing technical decisions and helping development teams make meaningful accessibility improvements.
